QTR is a space for all-queer, all-comedian casts to read all-time favourite scripts from movies like ‘But I'm a Cheerleader’ and ‘10 Things I Hate About You’. Produced and hosted by Sydney comedian Jenna Suffern, Queer Table Reads “gives the queer community and allies a reason to just have a laugh in this weird, chaotic world we live in.”

I've been working with Jenna for a number of years on fun and silly design needs for the world of comedy and with the news of Queer Table Reads being scheduled for Vivid Sydney 2021 (postponed currently) I asked Jenna if we could develop a full brand system moving forward.

The result is a vibrant, flexible and fun system that shape-shifts to wherever it needs to fit. The colours and typography chosen had to be suitable for all things budget that anyone in the comedy and arts world would be familiar with, from affordable printing services meaning easy CMYK breakdowns that will print well, to fonts that don't cost a fortune. The colour palette is large and doesn't have a specific start point or end point to allow the brand to reinvent itself each time it's used.

Yet to be revealed is the application of the brand to the script-read productions, however the approach is for it to be a collage, cut and paste take on whatever the original movie poster is. A direction we led with before we had a brand, but with a call-back to the QTR brand now that it exists.

Jenna explains the concept behind QTR:

“As there are a lack of queer comedic films, or queer films that don’t result in heartbreak and/or death, the concept behind ‘Queer Table Reads’ is taking the script from a heteronormative film that is loved by the queer community (e.g. 10 Things I Hate About You), and giving script to an all queer cast to read live on stage. By doing this it gives the queer community the happy endings in movies that we so lack.”

Queer Table Reads is a wonderful concept, so it needed to have a wonderful brand. One that can be implemented, posted, shared and worn with pride.
