SAINT BONI
Saint Boni is a Canberra-based portrait studio run by Thorson Photography. Founders Caleb and Amanda Thorson, amongst their other photography and print work, have been shooting more artistically styled portraits in recent years, leading them to start Saint Boni and leverage the style as an offering in and of itself.
Caleb and Amanda approached me to write copy to live across all things Saint Boni, from the website headlines, portrait category headlines, to each category descriptor and booking information. With brand tools set, in the way of type and colour, I also weighed in on the design direction across a suite of assets.
The project briefing provided some golden nuggets of truth to work with across the suite of copy, such as: “it can be funny or not funny”, “I like the long headlines of old magazine ads”, “people don’t actually know what they want”, and “our photos kind of look like the old master paintings”. We also identified that the target market is a bit of an anyone-who-wants-a-portrait-can-have-a-portrait situation.
Taking all of this, I developed a mission statement of sorts for Saint Boni to be guided by: Anyone and everyone can be a work of art so let’s throw it back and be clever about it.
The resulting copy, across standalone headlines, paired headlines with body text per category, and disclaimer copy balance the funny (dad joke, but dad who studied art history kind) with the functional. They take the photography to the level it deserves (high art, duh) while keeping it grounded and accessible. And as one line says itself, they balance the memento mori, with the live-laugh-lovey.
